Project Description

Facts about the destination

Locals describe Inhambane as “the land of the good people”. It is located in southern Mozambique and lies on Inhambane Bay northeast of Maputo. This sleepy historic town has a reputation for its rusting colonial architecture and strong Portuguese influence, which all remind visitors of a time past. The city is famous for the 170 year old cathedral of Our Lady of Conception, which is located in the old quarter. A rusted ladder leads one to the top of the spire, offering explorers panoramic views of the entire city and its harbour.

Inhambane is home to an extremely informative museum. The town also offers its visitors many nearby beaches of Tofo and Barra, which appeal due to their beauty and diving opportunities.

When to visit

Inhambane is the perfect year round location. It offers travellers plenty of opportunities to visit throughout the year. Temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius with the coolest time of the year being around July and the hottest in January and February.

Highlights

Inhambane is home to one of the most exciting markets in the country. Located along the main boulevard, the market is simply referred to as ‘Mercando Central’. It offers visitors the opportunity to taste and purchase a huge variety of foods, ranging from a colourful array of spices and vegetables to delicious prawns, fish and nuts.

The Bazaruto National Park is the largest sea park in whole Africa. Scuba diving is extremely popular in this area. In the Manta Reef and Gallaria Regions divers can explore giant manta rays, whale sharks, turtles and thousands of other interesting marine species in their natural habitat.
