Facts about the destination

The Quirimbas Islands are a group of 27 islands situated off the north eastern shore of Mozambique. Originally home to fishing settlements, the islands gained popularity due to Arab trading posts popping up as well as the thriving Portuguese trading routes that used them as hubs. Today many of the islands are uninhabited.

The best way to explore and observe all that these glorious islands have to offer is by setting sail on a traditional Dhow Safari. This will allow you to discover deserted sandbanks, beaches and uninhabited waters. For a more adventurous approach hire a kayak and paddle through the islands thick mangrove forests, where you never know what you might come across.

Pemba is the capital of the province of Cabo Delgado. As one of the main port cities in Mozambique, it is renowned for its classical Portuguese architecture and various cultures that call this classical town home. Strong Portuguese influences are evident wherever you look.

The town centre boasts an authentic market or souk, where locals sell their arts and crafts as well traditional silverware. Pemba is also known as a prime destination for water sport and diving enthusiasts, due to the coral reef close to the town’s shoreline.

Ibo Island is the oldest and most romantic settlement in Mozambique. It is mysterious and magical, the idyllic island you dream of visiting. When to visit

The entire area experiences humid equatorial climates with dry winters and wet, hot summers. Temperatures generally only fluctuate by several degrees throughout the year, due to the tropical location and close proximity to the equator.

The dry season runs from May to November. Then temperatures are marginally cooler, yet travellers experience sunny skies and low rainfall. During the wet season from December to April, humidity is extremely high and temperatures soar. The area can be visited throughout the year, with hot and summery weather being the norm.

The Quirimbas National Park is a protected area situated in the Cabo Delgado Province. It offers visitors the perfect diving opportunities. The National Park spans an area of 7500 kilometres squared and incorporates the eleven most southerly islands. They are surrounded by mangroves, pristine beaches and crystal clear waters.

Visitors can partake in a variety of ocean activities, beach excursions, guided cultural and heritage exploration as well as birding and wildlife opportunities. The surrounding oceans are home to glorious coral reefs inhabited by turtles and colourful tropical fish, dolphin pods, whales and the rare shy dugong.
