Project Description

Facts
Aptly referred to, as the “Smoke that Thunders”, the world’s grandest sheet of cascading water, has been tastefully preserved regardless of its ever-popular reputation worldwide. Named one of the seven natural wonders of the world continues to amaze all that have the opportunity to witness its beauty.

This one of a kind attraction has something on offer for everyone. Visitors to the Falls can occupy their days sipping champagne and watching the sites upon a boat cruise along the Zambezi. Or walk through the luxuriant growth of the rainforest situated on the lip of the chasm opposite the Falls. Hikers are kept cool thanks to the continuous falling spray compliments of the gushing waters only sixty metres ahead of them.

For the more daring traveller, the sites can also be taken in from above or below. Hop into a microlite or helicopter and soar to new heights. This amazing experience allows passengers to take in an unparalleled series of views of the Victoria Falls, making this an ample opportunity for one to capture the opulence that lies below.

Not only are visitors to the Falls enchanted by the wonder that is before them – the national parks surrounding the attraction offer some of the best game viewing the continent has to offer. The abundance of wildlife on view in both the Victoria Falls National Park and the Zambezi National Park include elephant, buffalo, crocodile, hippopotamus, zebra and the largest herd of the rare sable antelope in Africa. A large variety of bird and fish species also call the Falls home, making a trip along the Zambezi pleasing to the eye from both above and below.

For the adventurer in you, take on the Victoria Falls head on: go white water rafting, kayaking and canoeing in the various gorges along the rivers edge or do a bungee jump off the 111 metre bridge linking the two countries Zimbabwe and Zambia. These activities are definitely not for the faint hearted!

When to visit
Zimbabwe is an all year round holiday destination, providing its visitors with some of the best weather conditions in the world. The Victoria Falls experience two seasons yearly. The rainy season runs from late November to early April and is an interesting and distinct time to visit the area. This is due to the extra water and mist, making it almost impossible to see the base of the Falls. Even though it isn’t a photographers dream to experience so much water flowing in a congested area, it really is a spectacle of nature.

Dry season is from April to July. The water levels are high enough for one to experience all the splendour that Victoria Falls has to offer. Therefore it is the best time to visit this glorious site. During the later part of the dry season, August to October, visitors may see more rock face than the actual Falls. Yet this gives one the unique opportunity to walk across the top of the Falls, an exhilarating experience on its own.

Zimbabwe VS Zambia
The truly contested question amongst all visitors wishing to visit this majestic site is whether to stay on the Zimbabwean or Zambian side of the Falls. Both countries have something unique to offer its visitors and depending on the experience one wishes to have the decision is generally personal. Yet, due to easy and quick access travelling between the two is recommended.

With its more concentrated water flow, the air is filled with both the wonderful billowing sounds of the falls cascading down into the river below as well as the misty horizon that the area has become known for. The view is spectacular from this side of the river, allowing its onlookers the opportunity to stand opposite the Falls themselves and take in its entire grandeur head on.

The Zimbabwean side also offers its travellers a large array of wildlife to enjoy along with the waterfalls. The game is superior to that on the Zambian side and its national park situated along the river’s edge is praised by all who visit.

The year round continuous spray that comes off the Falls, has created a true rainforest, a unique destination where it rains 24 hours, 365 days a year, making a rain jacket a definate when visiting this area.

With various hotels on offer for all price ranges, fantastic infrastructure and easy access to the Falls, Zimbabwe is fast becoming the more popular side to visit. The beauty of the mighty Victoria Falls is matched only by the epic height of this world-class tourist attraction.

All in all, if one only has the opportunity to visit one of these astonishing countries, Zimbabwe is definitely your best option. This is due to its superior vantage point of the Falls, better locality and superior wildlife options available. Yet if on is presented with the chance to visit both sides of this spectacular site, access to and from each country is easy and generally affordable.
