Project Description

This traditionally styled Kalanga village is situated on the road between Maun and Francistown. As the name suggests “Planet Baobab” is the baobab capital of the world: the accommodation is nicely shaded by enormous baobab trees, with the average age of each tree being 4000 years and beyond.

Get blown away by the boundless lunar landscape of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, which is the size of Switzerland! Enjoy the well-known watering hole, an elephant’s paddling pool that attracts travellers of every description and the more colourful characters from Maun alike. Be amazed by Botswana’s wildlife, as it has the largest variety of mammals in Africa, with the Kalahari being the desert with the greatest species diversity in the world.

And best of all: overnight on the Makgadikgadi Pans under the most spectacular night skies in the world and enjoying a barbecue of a lifetime in the middle of nowhere! During dry season go quad biking across the Makgadikgadi Pans and sleep out in the pans or do a 5 night quad bike expedition to the remote and mysterious Kubu Island. During wet season see the spectacular migration of 35-75000 zebra and wildebeest – Southern Africa’s last and little-known annual migration.

Guests who prefer to stay in camp can light their own camp fire, or gather round the communal blaze in the lelwapa and enjoy a cool drink, sling their own boerewors onto the fire or enjoy Planet Baobab’s unique Pan-African cuisine.

There are various accommodation opportunities to choose from at Planet Baobab: Sleep in one of the comfortable Bakalanga huts with en-suite bathrooms or in dome tents with fully made up stretcher beds. Campers can stay at the camp site and put up their own tents. However, the highlight is to overnight on the pans: After a barbecue of a lifetime, curl up under a canopy of stars – a light which you cannot switch off. Planet Baobabs main area has a funky Afro-chic bar & restaurant with scrumptious pan-African dishes. Interesting and delicious dishes from all across Africa are served – also for vegetarians. Planet Baobab is said to have the biggest pool in the Kalahari for its guests cooling dip.
